Spring Equinox & Your Sleep

Written by our Co-Founder, Shea Morrison

The term ‘Equinox’ means ‘Equal Night’, on the date of an equinox, daytime and night-time have similar – but not equal – lengths. This has everything to do with the way our planet moves. Earth’s axis is tilted at a 23.5-degree angle relative to the plane of its orbit around the sun.  An equinox marks the exact moment when the sun enters an imaginary line in the sky. Picture a giant, invisible ring around the earth that sits directly above the equator.  Scientists call this make-believe halo the celestial equator.  It’s a line the sun only crosses twice a year – on the spring and autumn equinoxes.  Due to that solar angle, every region of our planet will experience close to 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness on Monday, 23 September.

Navroz Mobrark! The precise moment of the vernal equinox marks the first day of the first month on the Iranian solar calendar. It’s also the start of Nowruz, an awesome 13-day celebration sometimes called the Persian New Year. Observed by 300 million people around the world, Nowruz is preceded by a flurry of household chores.

4 Ways To Prepare for Sleep in Spring

Spring is the season for transformation, the temperature rises and the flowers come out and in turn, this can cause a rise in allergies and therefore problems with sleep.

The annual spring clean particularly in your bedroom could be the answer to a better night’s sleep.

We suggest:

  1. Starting with de-cluttering your space, look at ‘Kon – Marieing’ your space, not only will this help with a clean sleep sanctuary but it will also help waking up each morning with a clear mind
  2. Set aside some time to do a full clean, pull your bed out from the wall and clean around and under the whole bed, flip your mattress and if you can take your mattress outside in the sun.
  3. Dust, vacuum and mop!
  4. Try following a few feng shui tips for a better sleep when you re-arrange your room… never sleep with your head under a window, unplug everything – turn off all electrical appliances to reduce the EMF’s in the bedroom, let your bedroom breathe – open the doors and window and let the sunshine and breeze flow through and look at diffusing some essential oil, keep the space under your bed completely clear – if you sleep over clutter, your energy will get polluted and stale and stuck.
